WEST RICHLAND, Wash. – Benton County Fire District 4 has issued a warning as emergency calls to local rivers increase with summer’s arrival.
Fire Chief Paul Carlyle emphasized the hidden dangers in seemingly calm waters.
“We have already had an abnormally high number of emergency responses to the river this year,” Carlyle said. He cautioned that even shallow or slow-moving water can be dangerous.
The Columbia and Yakima Rivers may appear calm but often hide strong currents and underwater hazards. Firefighters urge residents to be cautious and respect these risks.
Close supervision is crucial, especially with children, as drowning can happen quickly and quietly. Adults are advised not to swim alone, and using the buddy system is recommended.
Alcohol should be avoided while swimming, boating or supervising others. Impaired judgment can lead to emergencies.
Wearing a life jacket is one of the most effective ways to prevent drowning. BCFD4 offers a loaner program for life jackets at Station 420, 2604 Bombing Range Road in West Richland. Call 509-967-2945 to arrange a pickup.
Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in Washington, but it is preventable with caution and the right equipment. Families are encouraged to enjoy the rivers safely.
