B5 building connections for the Tri-Cities refugee community

KENNEWICK, Wash.- B5 is a nonprofit serving the Tri-Cities refugee community. Theresa Roosendaal, Executive Director at BS said they are rooted in the neighborhood where most of the refugee families live. “We serve them with education and support for families so they can thrive in their new home,” said Roosendaal.

A huge part B5’s work happens in the classroom. B5 teaches English classes for adults and children, working with kids who are new to the community. The goal for these classes is to build connections and support, while also giving the skills needed to be successful in the workplace.

“We have a program we call “Dare to Dream” where we work with our high school youth to help them think about their future,” said Roosendaal.

Roosendaal said the refugee community has been growing in the Tri-Cities over the last 20 years. According to B5, each year, around 225 refugees are resettled in the Tri-Cities.

“They don’t have family, they don’t have connections that they need to help their family grow and thrive,” said Roosendaal. “It’s about building community and building language skills so you can do better in your job.”

That is why B5 helps immigrants and refugees find bridges to new beginnings. For those interested in volunteering or donating to help B5’s mission you can apply on their website.
