SUNNYSIDE, Wash. – Astria Health has made Naloxone (Narcan) available for free in the emergency room waiting areas of Astria Sunnyside Hospital, Astria Toppenish Hospital and five Astria Health Centers.

Community members can pick up a box without the need to check in or answer any questions.

The initiative was inspired by a request from a community member, prompting Astria Sunnyside Hospital Emergency Department nurse Gretchen Wheelock to collaborate with System Director of Pharmacy Elizabeth Jensen. Jensen secured a grant from the Washington State Department of Health to supply 200 Naloxone boxes, which are restocked monthly based on demand.

According to Astria Health’s 2024 Community Health Needs Assessment, opioid misuse is a significant crisis in the U.S., with Yakima County experiencing a 711% increase in opioid deaths from 2002 to 2023. Washington state saw a 386% increase in the same period.

Naloxone can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and is safe for all ages. It is crucial to have on hand if opioids are present in the home.

Brian Gibbons, President and CEO of Astria Health, emphasized the importance of this effort, stating, “By making Naloxone available at our hospitals and in several Astria Health Centers, we are taking a significant step in combating opioid overdoses and saving lives.”
