A look back at the first ever Winter Olympics

Sunday, January 25 marks 102 years since the first Winter Olympics took place in Chamonix, France. The inaugural event occurred on January 25, 1924, and featured athletes competing in 14 events across six sports. At the time, organizers referred to it as the International Winter Sports Week.

Featured sports included bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, and figure skating. Now, the Winter Olympics feature 16 sports.

Four years after the first International Winter Sports Week, the International Olympic Committee officially recognized the event as the Winter Games. The next competition was held in Saint Moritz, Switzerland.

The 25th Winter Olympics are set to begin in Milan, Italy on February 6, 2026.
