RICHLAND, Wash. – Construction on the Steptoe–Tapteal Intersection Reconstruction Project is set to enter its next phase on Monday, February 23, bringing up to two months of long-term lane closures and traffic delays.
The project aims to improve traffic safety and infrastructure reliability at one of Richland’s busiest intersections. City officials reported that crews are working to realign Tapteal Drive and build a new intersection leg to access commercial property.
A new traffic signal and enhanced pedestrian facilities will also be installed. Additionally, a new water main will be established to increase fire flow capacity, boosting the city’s water system reliability and public safety.
Work on the next phase of the project will commence on the east side of Steptoe Street, requiring lane closures and traffic shifts. City officials noted that the west end of Tapteal Drive will temporarily close at its intersection with Steptoe Street while the work is underway.
During this closure, traffic will be detoured via Center Parkway or Columbia Center Boulevard. Emergency services access will remain available, and traffic control measures will ensure safety for drivers.
City officials advised the community to expect delays, especially during peak times, and urged drivers to plan ahead and follow posted signs and traffic control measures.
