TRI-CITIES, Wash. – Visit Tri-Cities is seeking passionate local residents to compete in the upcoming Ironman Triathlon. The IM Tri Program aims to select two residents and provide them with the necessary tools to participate in this year’s Ironman competition.
The 70.3-mile race is a staple in the Tri-Cities, combining swimming, running and biking into one long event. Selected athletes will receive training, wellness services, admission and equipment, totaling nearly $10,000 in support.
Kevin Lewis, president and CEO of Visit Tri-Cities, says they started the program a year ago in response to the amazing outpour from the community.
“Ironman has just been such a positive influence on our community,” said Lewis. “And when we saw that, and when we saw the energy around it, we just felt like there’s more opportunity to involve people… to give them an opportunity to be part of something that others have discovered is to really, really transformational.”
The program partners with many local organizations, such as Bechtel, CRBC Health and Fitness, Ben Franklin Transit and more to bring applicants past financial barriers.
While Lewis says they’ve already had a good number of responses for the community already, they’re still looking for the public to apply for the program.
