RICHLAND, Wash. – Richland Fire & Emergency Services is making strides in emergency care with the launch of a pre-hospital blood transfusion program. This groundbreaking initiative aims to deliver blood products to critically ill patients before they reach the hospital.
Studies indicate that each minute of delay in receiving blood can increase mortality odds by up to five percent. This program, endorsed by the American College of Surgeons and other organizations, makes Richland the first fire and EMS agency in Eastern Washington to carry blood onboard.
Richland Fire & Emergency Services Chief Randy Aust emphasized the importance of this advancement. “By bringing blood directly to patients in the field, we can stabilize critical injuries sooner and improve outcomes during the most crucial moments of care,” he said.
To support this initiative, Richland is partnering with the American Red Cross to host a regional blood drive. The event is set for Tuesday, March 31, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Fire Station 74, 2710 Duportail St., Richland. The goal is to collect 150 blood donations, aiming for the largest single-day turnout in Washington State.
Donors will receive a $15 Amazon gift card, a commemorative t-shirt and a complimentary A1C test.
Pre-hospital blood transfusion programs are rare, with less than one percent of EMS agencies nationwide carrying blood. Richland’s initiative showcases a commitment to innovation and leadership in emergency medical services.
