Walla Walla, WA – The Walla Walla County Department of Community Health has announced the first flu-related death of the 2025-2026 season. The individual, over 65 years old, tested positive for influenza and passed away. The department extended condolences to the individual’s family and friends.

As of the most recent Washington State Influenza Update, there have been 59 confirmed flu-related deaths in the state. This includes a recent report of the first pediatric flu death in Snohomish County on January 28, 2026.

The flu season generally runs from October through April. Influenza, a contagious respiratory virus, can lead to mild or severe illness. Those at higher risk for complications include young children, pregnant individuals, adults over 65 and people with underlying health conditions.

The Walla Walla County Department of Community Health advises residents to stay updated on flu, Covid-19 and RSV vaccinations, remain at home if sick and practice good hygiene. This includes washing hands thoroughly, covering coughs and sneezes and sanitizing frequently.

An annual flu vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older. It helps reduce the risk and severity of illness and can be administered alongside the Covid-19 vaccine. Residents are encouraged to speak with healthcare providers or pharmacies for more information.
