Senate passes resolution to display commemorative Jan. 6 plaque in honor of law enforcement

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) announced in a joint press release Thursday that the Senate unanimously passed their resolution to display a commemorative plaque honoring the actions of law enforcement during the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

According to a copy of the resolution, the plaque will be displayed at a “publicly accessible location in the Senate wing of the United States Capitol” until it can be installed permanently on the capitol’s western front.

Congress passed a law requiring the installation of a similar plaque in 2022. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said the statute was “not implementable,” and the plaque has never been displayed.

“Congress passed a law requiring the installation of a plaque to honor these heroes, and the failure to permanently display it remains an egregious insult to all those who were injured defending the Capitol, and the five officers who died because of the attack on the Capitol,” Merkley said in the press release. “Today, we took an important step forward to honor their sacrifice, and I thank my colleague, Senator Tillis, for working with me to ensure we will never forget the truth about this attack on our democracy.”

Tillis echoed similar calls for recognizing the efforts of law enforcement.

“We owe it to these brave men and women to honor their service and acknowledge the critical role they played in defending the United States Capitol.”
