WAPATO, Wash. – High water levels have led to the closure of several roads in and around Wapato. Donald Wapato Road, which leads to the bridge over the river, and Parker Bridge Road just outside of town have been shut down due to the flooding.
Road closures were also seen in Toppenish, where water had already reached some buildings and signs were barely visible in low-lying areas.
Residents in the area, however, say they’ve faced worse flooding in the past. An employee at Wayne’s Tires, located near the Donald Wapato Road closure, shared his experience working during the floods in 1996. He said compared to that year, today doesn’t worry him. Other residents echoed this sentiment, confident that the community can handle the current conditions.
Despite the community’s experience with past floods, officials are urging drivers to avoid closed roads and not to drive through standing water.
