Yakima, Washington – A local man, Shawn De Sun Speedis, age 19, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for attempted abusive sexual contact with a child under 12 on the Yakama Reservation, according to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Washington.

Chief United States District Judge Stanley A. Bastain also sentenced Speedis to five years of supervised release following his imprisonment. Speedis will be required to register as a sex offender.

Court documents revealed that on October 31, 2024, Speedis coerced an 11-year-old girl after she returned home from trick-or-treating. He asked the child to see and touch his penis, and when she refused, he exposed himself.

United States Attorney Pete Serrano emphasized the seriousness of the crime, saying, “The sexual abuse of children is some of the most heinous criminal conduct that we face as a community.” Serrano added that his office is committed to standing up for victims of sexual crimes.

W. Mike Herrington, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Seattle field office, commented on the impact of the crime, stating, “Mr. Speedis turned Halloween evening last year into a profoundly traumatic experience for this child: a predator seeking to sexually abuse her in her own home.”

This case is part of the Department of Justice’s Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) Regional Outreach Program. The program focuses on preventing and responding to missing or murdered Indigenous people through collaboration with federal, Tribal, state, and local partners.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Yakama Nation Tribal Police Department and prosecuted by Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons Assistant United States Attorney Bree R. Black Horse.
