Richland tackles trail misuse with new safety plan

RICHLAND, Wash. – Richland Parks and Recreation is taking action to combat trail misuse throughout the city following community feedback and a detailed safety process.

Last Thursday, the Richland Parks and Rec Commission met to address past safety issues and discuss future goals for 2025. As part of their efforts, mobile security trailers were installed in parks and operating hours were reduced by one hour to enhance safety.

Chris Waite, Parks and Public Facilities director for Richland, shared insights into the next phase of their safety plan. He emphasized the importance of education and enforcement.

“One is just doing a general audit of our trails and the signage to make sure people are getting the appropriate messages when they’re using the trails so they understand etiquette or where they can use the trails and what vehicles are allowed on the trails,” Waite said.

The plan’s second step involves community engagement. Waite explained it could involve forming a subcommittee and gathering stakeholders to engage with the community, hear their concerns and find solutions.

The final steps include creating an awareness campaign and enforcing rules if needed. Waite noted the aim is to have these measures ready by spring 2026.
