KENNEWICK, Wash. – Kennewick experienced four fires overnight, prompting warnings from local fire officials as residents prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July.

The fires all sparked within hours of each other, though it is too early to determine the exact cause.

However, Deputy Fire Chief with the Kennewick Fire Department Michael Heffner noted that evidence of fireworks was found at the scene of a different fire over the weekend. “Certainly, improperly discarded, burning materials, cigarettes, etc. could have caused the fire… So, [we’re] just really encouraging folks to use extreme caution,” he said.

With the Fourth of July approaching, Heffner emphasized the importance of celebrating safely. “I always encourage folks when they’re using fireworks to have a five gallon bucket full of water. So after the firework is used, douse it in the water, let it soak there before you dispose of it,” he explained.

He also advised using legal fireworks on non-flammable surfaces like asphalt or concrete.

Heffner further stressed the need for quick action if a fire does start. He advised residents to call 911 immediately, stating, “The sooner they can get out there… the better the outcome will be.”

As Kennewick prepares for the holiday, residents are urged to follow these safety precautions to prevent additional fires.
