RICHLAND, Wash. – The new Sturgeon Cove Playground at Richland’s Howard Amon Park is nearing completion, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for May 16 at 11:00 a.m.
According to the city’s project update, construction began in September 2024, with most equipment installed by December of that year. However, some components faced delays, pushing the remaining installation into February and March 2025.
The playground’s design mirrors the existing structure, featuring waterway and cruise boat-themed elements. It offers improved accessibility, more features, and a larger structure to increase user capacity with firm surfaces and wider access points, dueling ziplines, more swings, and play areas for all ages.
The primary play structure will replicate a paddle wheel cruise ship, reflecting those that cruise the Columbia River and dock at Lee Landing during the summer.
The playground will retain some beloved amenities, such as the Elephant Slide, fish sculptural elements, and rock climbing features.
