KENNEWICK, Wash.- Tri-City Judo is making waves with its nationally ranked athletes. Owner Robert Borisch introduced some of his top competitors and shares insights into the benefits of judo.

Emma Hlawek, ranked number two in the U.S., recently took two silver medals at the U.S. Youth National Championships in Salt Lake City. Sophia Lechuga holds the number one spot in the country and has been a four-time top-ranked athlete. Natalie Ruelas just claimed her first-place title, making her number one in her division.

Borisch explained that judo is not only a sport but also a form of self-defense.

“Judo is the second most practiced sport in the world, but it’s a self-defense, but it’s a competitive nature,” he said.

He added that judo offers both standing throws and ground techniques, making it suitable for all ages.

The athletes demonstrated their skills, showcasing various throws and techniques.

“There’s about 125 throws. They each know, they don’t know the 125, but they each have about 30 throws they know, and they can fight right or left,” Borisch said.

Tri-City Judo, located at 5020 West Clearwater, welcomes anyone interested in trying out the sport.

“We’re a legal nonprofit, so anyone can just drop in and try it,” Borisch said.

The club also offers wrestling, with Sophia recently placing at Nationals.

Borisch highlighted the club’s unique position, saying, “We’re the one club that’s competitive in jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and judo. So, we’re the only one that does that.”

With 10 kids ranked in the top 10 nationally, Tri-City Judo is a hub for aspiring athletes.
