BENTON-FRANKLIN, Wash. – The Regional Traffic Count Program, managed by the Benton-Franklin Council of Governments (BFCOG), is making strides in understanding traffic trends around the Tri-Cities.

Launched in 2016, the biennial effort began gathering traffic data using automatic tube counters, devices that monitor the pressure pulses generated when vehicles pass over them

In 2024, the Regional Traffic Count Program Analysis by BFCOG collected data and highlighted the 25 sites with the highest average daily traffic volumes, according to a staff report prepared for Tuesday’s Richland City Council meeting.

The report found 11 of the 25 highest volume locations are in the City of Richland and six of those 11 are located on George Washington Way.

George Washington Way at Jadwin Ave had the highest average yearly traffic volume in the city followed by George Washington Way at Adams St, George Washington Way at Bradley Blvd, George Washington Way at Lee Blvd and George Washington Way and Swift Blvd.

This analysis supports areas needing congestion mitigation and project implementations.

Road construction plans are already underway for the South George Washington Way Intersection Improvement Project which stretches 1,450 feet south of Columbia Point Drive to Comstock Street, and includes Aaron Drive, Adams Street, and Columbia Point Boulevard.

The BFCOG Regional Traffic Count Analysis and its impact on the City of Richland is expected to present its findings to the Richland City Council on Tuesday, April 15.

Similar presentations for the city of Pasco will be delivered on April 21 and for the city of West Richland on May 6. A presentation date for the City of Kennewick has not been announced.

Traffic numbers for Pasco, West Richland and Kennewick are expected to come out over the coming weeks.
