One injured in Kennewick officer-involved shooting

KENNEWICK, Wash.–Kennewick officers responded to an incident involving a man with a knife last night.

When officers arrived at the scene, the man was armed with a large knife in the parking lot of the apartments, according to the Kennewick Police Department. Two officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the man sprinted at one of the officers with the knife in his hand.

Both of the officers discharged firearms, hitting the man, according to KPD. Medical assistance was provided and the man was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

When the man is released from the hospital, he will be booked in the Benton County Jail for assault in the first degree, according to KPD. Nobody else was harmed and the incident was caught on the officers’ body cameras.

A Special Investigations Unit will conduct an independent investigation, according to KPD. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is the lead agency on the investigation, and the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations has been notified of the incident.
