Richland parks to reopen this weekend after extensive repairs and safety improvements

RICHLAND, Wash. – Columbia Park West and Wye Park in Richland are set to reopen Saturday, March 15, following temporary closures for vital repairs and improvements.

The City of Richland undertook a comprehensive restoration effort during the closure due to vandalism, fires, and other unsafe conditions.

This included removing hazardous waste, cleaning up garbage, and managing vegetation.

“The temporary closure was an unfortunate but necessary decision to restore and protect these valuable community spaces.” Deputy City Manager Joe Schiessl said in a release.

In collaboration with Benton County Human Services, the City said the needs of unhoused individuals who frequented the parks were addressed. Access to Bateman Island remained available, allowing the public to enjoy some park features during the closure.

To ensure continued safety, the City has increased patrols by park rangers and the Richland Police Department. Additional staff will support park rangers, and operational changes aim to enhance visibility and community engagement, the city said in a release.

Residents can report concerns or maintenance needs through the City’s service request system. For more information, visit the Richland Parks & Recreation website.
