City of Kennewick approves new trail plan, prioritizes connectivity and community access

KENNEWICK, Wash. – The City of Kennewick is setting the stage for a significant expansion of its trail system with the Pathways and Trails Master Plan.

This initiative, approved by the council during its March 5 meeting, is designed to align with the city’s goals to promote active transportation, wellness, and equitable access to recreation.

With 25 city and community parks, two regional parks, and existing canal infrastructure, projects that construct new pathways, trails, or crossings would be prioritized based on several criteria.

These include network connectivity, connections to schools, community centers, medical buildings, libraries, commerce centers, and underrepresented communities. The feasibility of construction and access to many residents are also considered.

A total of 57 projects have been identified for consideration with nine high-priority projects that include pathways at locations such as Columbia Park, Bateman Island, and Hansen Park.

The proposed projects were reviewed by the City of Kennewick, the steering committee, regional planning partners, irrigation districts, and the public. Final projects are documented in the Implementation Plan and Kennewick Pathways and Trails Master Plan.
