How local school districts determine snow closures

TRI-CITIES, Wash. – With the possibility of one to three inches of snow by Friday night, schools across the Tri-Cities are gearing up for potential snow days.

Preparation and evaluation for snow days begin as early as 3:00 a.m. in the Tri-Cities.

Officials first begin their day by driving bus routes and streets to assess conditions. From there, they proceed with snow and ice removal if needed.

Communication with other school districts follows, and finally, each district’s superintendent receives a debrief on the conditions.

In Richland and Pasco, decisions about starting, stopping, or delaying the school day are made by 5:00 a.m. In Kennewick, the final decision is made by no later than 6:00 a.m.
