KENNEWICK, Wash.- With freezing temperatures here the City of Kennewick is urging residents to take steps to prevent frozen pipes.
Bob Bepple, City of Kennewick Utility Operations Supervisor, said it’s important to check your pipes daily.
“If you do have a leak from a frozen pipe, call a plumber to help shut off your water to stop the leak,” Bepple said. “If it’s in the water meter box, then definitely call the city of Kennewick so we can come out and address maybe a frozen water meter.”
Frozen pipes can cause damage that can be expensive to repair. By following a few simple steps you can protect your home against frozen pipes according to the City of Kennewick.
To prevent frozen pipes:
Keep cabinet doors open under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes. Let a small stream of water run from your faucet to keep water moving. Use heat tape on exposed pipes in cold areas like attics, basements and crawl spaces. Add insulation to attics basements, and crawl spaces. Keep garage doors closed to retain heat. Disconnect outdoor hoses from spigots. If leaving home keep the heat on.
If your pipes do freeze:
Turn on the faucet. Flowing water can help melt the ice. Apply head using a heating pad or hairdryer.Never use an open flame to melt pipes.
If your water meter is frozen broken or leaking contact Kennewick Water Distribution Department at (509) 584-4419.
