RICHLAND, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has kicked off an $8 million project to improve sections of State Route 240 in Richland, focusing on safer and more efficient travel for all drivers, WSDOT announced in a release.

The project will include the construction of new lanes to facilitate safer merging, along with the installation of a noise wall, updated traffic signals, pedestrian crossings, lights, and signs.

“We understand that construction can be an inconvenience, but traveler safety and the safety of workers is our top priority,” Alejandro Sanguino, WSDOT project engineer said. “The project will help reduce congestion and improve operations and safety in the area, but please slow down, stay alert and help us all get home safely during construction.”

Work on the noise wall along the south portion of SR 240 by the Moon River RV Resort began in March. This month, paving and repairs will start along Kingsgate, Battelle Boulevard, and Stevens Drive, with travel restrictions expected during weekdays.

In June, reconstruction and widening work will begin at the Hagen Road and SR 240 intersection, along with signal modifications. Nightly closures from 6:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. will occur from Sunday evening through Saturday morning, with a signed detour directing travelers via Kingsgate Way, Battelle Boulevard, and Stevens Drive to SR 240, according to WSDOT.

The project is scheduled for completion in August. Drivers are advised to use WSDOT’s real-time travel map to plan their trips and avoid delays.
