20 states, including Washington and Oregon, have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration and Department of Housing and Urban Development for placing new conditions on access to funds from the Continuum of Care housing program.
The program offers grant assistance to states with the goal of reducing homelessness, with a specific emphasis on veterans and people with disabilities.
Now, the Trump administration is changing the conditions for access to exclude states with policies it disagrees with, particularly pertaining to LGBTQ+ Americans. For example, local authorities recognizing more than two genders could make their states ineligible.
The changes are also set to reduce the amount of grant funds the states can spend on permanent housing solutions.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development has not yet commented publicly on the matter.
